Armbian 23.08 Released: A Linux Distribution for ARM-Based Computers
Armbian, a compact Linux distribution tailored for various ARM, RISC-V, and X86 based computers, has released version 23.08. The distribution supports a wide range of single-board computers including Raspberry Pi, Odroid, Orange Pi, Banana Pi, Helios64, Pine64, Nanopi, and Cubieboard. It is built on Debian and Ubuntu package bases but uses its own assembly system to optimize size, increase performance, and add protection mechanisms.
The new release includes several optimizations to enhance functionality. Some of the notable features include:
- Support for more than 30 Linux kernel options for different ARM and ARM64 platforms
- SDK for creating custom system images, packages, and distributions
- Inclusion of the BOX64 emulator for running programs designed for X86 processors
- Pre-built packages for popular desktop environments such as KDE, GNOME, BUDGIE, CINMON, i3-WM, MATE, XFCE, and XMONAD
- Option for two-factor authentication when accessing SSH
The release also introduces several new features and improvements:
- Added support for Crust, Orange Pi Plus, Radxa CM5, and Lenovo X13S laptop
- Updated Banana Pi CM4 boards to kernel version 6.1 and added support for 4G modems with PCI interface
- Official scripts for distribution updates
- New extensions Armbian-Gaming and Grub-With-DTB
- Enhanced support for various boards including Nanopi Duo2, Orange Pi 5, Khadas Vim3/Vim3L, and Rock5a
- Inclusion of a Debian 13-based assembly
- Added driver for MT7921U Wi-Fi cards
- Gnome-calculator is back in the default supply
