Varjo Unveils AR Set for Army

The Finnish manufacturer of industrial equipment for virtual and mixed reality, Varjo, has announced the release of their new generation of mixed reality sets designed for enterprises and the military. These sets promise to offer an experience that is “almost indistinguishable from natural vision” in virtual and mixed reality.

Varjo reports that over a quarter of the leading companies on the Fortune 100 list are using their technologies. These technologies have been used to train astronauts and pilots, reduce production time in the automotive industry, revolutionize medicine, and create stunning 3D visualizations for architects and designers.

The new XR-4 series is a significant improvement over the previous generation. Patrick Whitt, the main product director of Varjo, stated, “Entering during a period of rapid expansion of the use of mixed reality, we are proud to be pushing the industry forward by bridging the gap between human and computer vision with our new XR-4 series.”

The Varjo XR-4 mixed reality headset is equipped with 20 megapixel front-facing cameras that deliver high-quality images on two 4K mini-led displays. The XR-4 is designed to work with NVIDIA GPU workstations, providing photorealistic visualizations on two 4K mini-led displays with 51 pixels per degree in a field of vision of 120 x 105 degrees. Featuring a brightness of 200 nits, a refresh rate of 90 Hz, eye movement tracking at a frequency of 200 Hz, and support for 98% of the SRGB color scheme, the XR-4 offers an immersive experience. Additionally, the headset is compatible with glasses, does not require special lenses, and supports automatic adjustment of the distance between the user’s pupils.

The XR-4 utilizes front-facing cameras with 20 megapixels and low latency to enable high-quality mixed reality with virtual content. It also features a 300 KPIX Lidar for depth detection with a range of up to 7 meters, which is eight times better than the previous generation. The headset includes new ambient light sensors and built-in DTS speakers with spatial sound and noise-canceling microphones, making it ideal for collaborative work.

Razer tracking controllers are included with the headset for accurate interactions and high tactile immersion. The XR-4 is compatible with a range of 3D platforms and software, including NVIDIA OMNIVERSE, Unreal Engine, Unity, Openxr, Blender, Engagevr, Metavr, and Autodesk vred.

The base model XR-4 is priced at $3,990, while the Focal Edition starts at $9,990. Both models can be configured for
