Root DNS Server B IP Address Change

Root Server DNS Address Change

November 27, 2023 – Planned change in IPV4 and IPV6 addresses of one of the 13 root servers DNS will take place to ensure the smooth operation of the root zone DNS. The server b.root-sers.net will now use IP addresses 199.9.14.201 and 170.247.170.2, and the new IPV6 address will be 2001: 500: 200::B-2801:1b8:10::b. The old addresses will still accept requests until at least November 27, 2024.

To maintain a reliable infrastructure, the change in addresses is being implemented to diversify the binding to different regional Internet registrars (RIR). The registrar lacnic (Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre) has allocated the new address 170.247.170.2, which has not been involved in the work of root servers before.

This address change aims to address the situation where some registrars, such as lacnic and Afric, were not previously involved in maintaining root DNS servers. Currently, the American Registry for Internet Numbers (Arin) provides addresses for 10 out of the 13 existing root servers. The remaining addresses are associated with the European RIPE and the Asian APNIC registrars.

To obtain the actual file containing the lists of root servers, you can use the command “Dig Ns. @a.root-sers.net” or download it from the Internet site.
