According to information obtained by the LowPASs from insider sources, Amazon is developing Vega’s environment based on the Linux kernel. This new environment is planned to be used on Fire TV television settings, smart screens, and other Amazon consumer devices. It will replace the current Fire OS firmware, which is based on the Android platform (specifically, Fire OS 7 is based on Android 9). The first devices based on the new system are set to be released next year.
The development of the OS is nearing completion, with the main focus now on preparing the SDK for application development. The user environment in VEGA will be built using Web technologies. For application development, it is proposed to use JavaScript and the REACT NATIVE framework. The choice of this framework is based on its versatility and development support for different platforms, including Android. This will make it easier to create applications that can be adapted to work in both the old and new Fire TV environments.
This is not Amazon’s first foray into using Linux. The company already supplies an Amazon Linux distribution for its cloud systems, which is built on the Fedora Linux package base.
