GNOME Foundation Obtains Millions from Sovereign to Improve Open Source Infrastructure
The GNOME Foundation recently announced that it has secured a major financial contribution from the Sovereign Fund. The fund, which was established in Germany to enhance the development of open digital infrastructure and open source ecosystems, received support from the German Ministry of Economy and the Federal Agency for Subversive Innovations. The funding will be used to upgrade the GNOME platform, enhance tools and resources for people with disabilities, and introduce new features for public interest purposes.
Among the specific initiatives planned are the development of a new stack for individuals with disabilities, improvements to the existing stack, support for selective encryption of user home directories, modernization of password and key storage, enhanced hardware support, establishment of quality control measures, expansion of the Freedesktop API, and consolidation and enhancement of platform components.
In addition to GNOME, the Sovereign Foundation has also extended financial support to several other open projects including Opensh, Wireguard, Python, Rubygems, Curl, Openbgpd, Openmls, Openpgp.js/Gopenpgp, Sequoia PGP, and YOOCTO. Details regarding the amount of funding allocated to these projects have not been disclosed.
