Ubuntu Touch OTA-3 Focal Firmware Release

Project ubports has taken over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform from Canonical. The latest firmware, Ubuntu Touch OTA-3 Focal (Over-The-Air), is now available. This release is based on the Ubuntu package base 04.20, while previous versions were based on Ubuntu 16.04. As part of this project, Unity 8 has been renamed to Lomiri and an experimental port of the desktop has been developed.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-3 Focal is now available for several devices, including ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1, FairPhone 3/3+, FairPhone 4, F(x)tec Pro1 X, Google Pixel 3a/3a XL, Vollaphone 22, Vollaphone X23, Vollaphone X, Vollaphone, JingPad A1, Sony Xperia X, Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC/X3, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9/9 Pro/9 Pro Max/9s, and Xiaomi Poco M2 Pro. Beta versions are also available for Pine64 PinePhone, Pinephone Pro, Pinetab, and Pinetab2.

The key changes in Ubuntu Touch OTA-3 Focal include:

  • Added support for Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, Jingpad A1, Sony Xperia X, Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC/X3, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9/9 Pro/9 Pro Max/9s.
  • Released the first beta version of Ubuntu Touch 20.04 for Pinephone, Pinephone Pro, Pinetab, and Pinetab2.
  • Redesigned interface for safety and privacy settings.
  • Added initial support for Snap packages.
  • Added search function in chats for the messaging program.
  • Added switch between mobile and desktop mode in the Morph browser, as well as the ability to control the automatic loading of images.
  • Updated Qtwebengine engine to version 5.15.15 in the Morph browser.
