The results of the competition for the choice of new logos for the Opensuse project and its distributions of Tumbleweed, Leap, Slowroll, and Kalpa have been published. The winners were selected through a public vote:
- The main logo for Opensuse: image
- Opensuse Tumbleweed: Three logos that showed very close results were recognized as winners. Image
- Opensuse Leap: Image
- Opensuse Slowroll: Image
- Opensuse Kalpa: Image
Work on replacing the logo is being carried out as part of an initiative to distance the Opensuse branding elements from the SUSE project. Previously, SUSE and the Opensuse project shared a common logo, which caused confusion and distorted the perception of the project among potential users. The old logo also had disadvantages such as being too bright for printing on a light background, poor scaling, and unsuitability for small buttons (the logo lost recognition at a size of 48×48).
One of the requirements for the new logos was the ability to identify the project without text, only through the image. This is because the old SUSE and Opensuse logos used the same image of a green chameleon with different text descriptions. In the case of the development of Opensuse into a separate non-profit organization, the availability of individual logos will allow for branding associated with Opensuse.
