Rhino Linux 2023.4 has been released, introducing a distribution that implements the Ubuntu version with a continuous delivery of updates. This allows users to have access to the latest versions of programs. The new versions are mostly obtained from the Devel Vead Ubuntu repository, which synchronizes the assembly of packages with Debian Sid and Unstable. The project distributes desktop components, Linux kernel, booting screensavers, design themes, Firefox browser, and utilities through a separate repository called pacstall. Installation images are available for architectures x86_64 (2 GB), ARM64 (1.9 GB), as well as for ARM devices such as Pinetab, Pinetab2, Pinephone, Pinephone Pro, and Raspberry Pi. The images can be loaded in Live-mode. More information on how to download them can be found here.
The distribution utilizes its own package manager called Rhino-PKG (RPK), which is built on top of APT, Pacstall, Flatpak, and Snap package managers. Rhino-PKG allows users to perform standard package operations, such as installation, removal, update, and search, using a single utility. The distribution is assembled using Livebuild tools from the Debian project, with modifications borrowed from VanillaOS. The installation process involves the use of the Calamares installer.
The graphic interface of Rhino Linux features its own user environment called Unicorn. Unicorn is a customized version of XFCE that combines a modern design with a lightweight approach. It incorporates the Plank Dock as the side panel of applications and the standard XFCE panel as the top panel. App Grid mode, based on Lightpad, is used for navigation among installed applications.
Navigation between open windows and virtual desktops is facilitated by the use of the xfdashboard package, which provides an interface similar to Gnome Shell and Macos Expose. For quick application launch, ula
