The President of Russia has recently signed a new law that extends the transitional period for the transfer to domestic authorization services until January 1, 2025.
In July of this year, a law was passed that prohibits the use of foreign Internet platforms for the authorization of Russians starting from December 1, 2023. The amendment to law 149-ФЗ states that authorization on websites and applications will only be possible through Russian telephone numbers, public services, EBS, or other services that are fully or over 50% controlled by Russian entities.
However, a new bill was submitted to the State Duma in November, proposing an extension to the transition period for the use of foreign Internet services for authorization.
Anton Gorekin, the deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Inform Policy and the initiator of this bill, explained that the extension was necessary after consulting with the IT industry. The current deadlines were found to be insufficient for the stable functioning of Russian Internet platforms, which could negatively impact the user experience of Russian internet users.
The reason behind these changes is that not all Russian companies have been able to adequately prepare and meet the requirements by the original deadline of December 1. The moratorium will apply to the provision in the law concerning Russian control over authorization systems. However, buttons for authorization through Google and Apple ID will still have to be removed by this date, according to the deputy.
