Chrome Unveils Secret Perpetrators Slowing Down PCs

The New Chrome Browser Update Allows Users to Monitor Memory Usage of Tabs

The latest update of the CHROME browser for desktop computers now includes a feature that allows users to easily monitor the amount of memory occupied by each tab. This function is particularly helpful in identifying sites and processes that may slow down the performance of a laptop.

Following the introduction of the Memory Saver mode in Google Chrome earlier this year, Google has now released a new feature that displays the memory usage for individual tabs when hovering over them with the cursor. This feature is available on most desktop platforms, including Chromeos, Windows, and Mac, as long as users have Google Chrome version 119 or later installed.

In addition to showing the domain and name of each page, the Chrome tab now includes a mini-report that provides detailed information about the memory consumption caused by the content displayed on the tab and any background processes that consume memory. If a tab remains inactive for a certain period of time, Chrome will also indicate if the Memory Saver tab is suspended to conserve memory.

This memory usage monitoring feature will prove to be extremely useful for users who want to identify tabs and processes that potentially slow down their system. It also offers an easier way to access tab usage statistics without having to navigate to the three-dot menu.

In conjunction with this update, Google has expanded the functionality of Chrome’s memory saving and energy saving capabilities, which were introduced earlier this year for desktop platforms.

The memory saving mode preserves the memory of inactive tabs, allowing other tabs on the desktop to operate more efficiently. Inactive tabs remain visible and will be reactivated when the user returns to them.

Meanwhile, the energy saving mode reduces battery consumption by limiting visual and background activities, including animations and reducing the frequency of video frames. Activating this mode slightly reduces visual performance. Users can customize the energy saving mode to turn on when the battery is charged up to 20% or when the PC is disconnected from the network. Both modes are enabled by default and can be configured in the side panel of Chrome settings.
