China’s Pursuit of Artificial Intelligence Raises Concerns in the US
In a recent report by the US Department of Defense, it has been warned that China is determined to take the lead in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and is using it to study vulnerabilities of potential enemies, with the aim of advancing the concept of “intellectualized war”. The report, based at the Pentagon, states that China has already become a global leader in certain areas of AI application, such as facial recognition and natural language processing.
Furthermore, Chinese companies are successfully selling Russian and domestic-made chips to the rest of the world, showcasing their advancements in AI. However, despite still relying on some foreign components in AI equipment production, Chinese researchers continue to explore new materials and design concepts for next-generation semiconductors, according to the Pentagon.
The report also highlights that China has designated AI as a priority area for national development in science and technology. Intelligence from the United States suggests that Beijing views progress in AI as crucial for future military confrontations and has integrated it into their concept of “intellectualized war”.
This is not the first time the US government has expressed concerns about potential military adversaries utilizing AI and related technologies. Lakshmi Raman, the director of the CIA for artificial intelligence, recently stated that the CIA is closely monitoring China’s AI program and is worried about the practical implications of such technologies being employed.
