Truenas Scale 23.10 Distribution Released

IxSystems published Distribution
truenas scale 23.10, which utilizes the Linux kernel and the DEBIAN package base. The company’s previous products, including TRUEOS, PC-BSD, Truenas, and Freenas, were based on FreeBSD. Similar to Truenas Core (Freenas), Truenas Scale can be
loaded and used for free. The size of the ISO-image is 1.5 GB. The initial texts of specific assembly for Truenas Scale
scenarios,
Web-interface and
layers have been published on GitHub.

Truenas Core products, based on FreeBSD, and Truenas Scale, based on Linux, are developed in parallel and complement each other using a shared code base of tools and a common Web interface. The introduction of an additional edition based on the Linux kernel is driven by the desire to implement certain ideas that are not achievable when using FreeBSD. It is worth noting that this is not the first such initiative, as in 2009 Freenas was separated into the OpenMediaVault distribution, which made use of the Linux kernel and the DEBIAN package base.

One of the key improvements in Truenas Scale is the ability to create storage facilities distributed across multiple nodes, whereas Truenas Core (Freenas) is designed as a solution based on a single server. In addition to greater scalability, Truenas Scale also offers the use of isolated containers, simplifying infrastructure and making it suitable for creating
programmable infrastructures. Truenas Scale uses the ZFS
openzfs file system. It provides support for Docker containers, KVM virtualization,
