Virtual Realities, Real Threats: Private Price in Online Game Era

The Online Game Sector Uncovers Dubious Data Collection Practices

The online game sector continues to actively develop, offering various gaming activities in digital format. In recent years, the growth and transformation of this sector have become possible thanks to the expansion of online platforms for games, a change in user preferences, and technological innovation.

However, behind the curtain of this fascinating gameplay, dangers are lurking. Researchers from the Department of Computer Sciences of the University of Aalto discovered dubious practices of data collection in online games. Platforms often require users to create accounts with personal information, as well as collect data on the statistics of players, in-game purchases, chat logs, and user content.

Professor Yannah Lindvist noted, “We were struck by how consciously players relate to the issue of maintaining their confidentiality. For example, they avoid the use of voice chat if it is not absolutely necessary. Some games try to stimulate players to reveal their online persona, offering virtual rewards in return.”

Researchers revealed examples of “dark design” when the interface manipulates users, prompting them to act in a certain way, such as connecting their profiles on social networks or allowing information exchange between players.

The authors of the study recommend that online games provide transparent and unambiguous privacy policies, indicating what data is collected, how it is used, and with whom it is shared. User consent to the collection and processing of data should be obtained by all online games.

“Games should really be fascinating and safe for everyone, with respect for the autonomy of the player,” concluded Lindvist.
