YouTube Resumes in Russia: What’s Behind Return?

According to the Globalcheck service, access to the platform began to recover from subscribers of Russian operators.

Earlier, Mosfilm General Director Karen Shakhnazarov said that at a meeting in the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin promised to “look and understand” with the problem of slowing YouTube.

Problems with access to YouTube began in July 2024. Roskomnadzor explained this decision by “numerous violations” by the platform and its anti-Russian policy. In particular, the department indicated content that violates Russian laws and threatens the country’s national security.

In addition, in August 2024, some Internet providers in St. Petersburg temporarily unlocked YouTube for their users, referring to the lack of an official ban from Roskomnadzor. These measures were temporary and limited to regional operators.

In October 2024, the Russian court fined Google for a symbolic amount of 2 Undecillion rubles for restrictions on access to Russian state media on YouTube. The Kremlin called this a symbolic gesture and called on Google to remove restrictions from Russian broadcasters.

The restoration of access to YouTube may indicate a softening of the position of the Russian authorities in relation to the platform, but there have been no official statements from Roskomnadzor or other state bodies.

Russian users continue to monitor the development of the situation, hoping for the full restoration of the stable work of YouTube in the country.
