Microsoft Research, the research unit of the Microsoft Corporation, conducted tests on storage of a significant amount of data on glassy plates as part of the Project Silica initiative. If successful, this breakthrough could ensure the preservation of information for thousands of years without any loss in quality.
The data is stored on glass using three-dimensional pixels, known as voxels. Voxels are commonly used in medical imaging, such as MRI scans, where the analysis and visualization of volumetric structures are required. They are also utilized in computer games and the modeling of complex 3D structures to create realistic objects and environments.
This approach, based on voxels, enables a more detailed representation of space by considering depth, height, and width. This opens up additional opportunities for the analysis and visualization of data in 3D.
