OpenWRT 23.05.0 Release: New Features and Device Support

After a year of development, OpenWRT has presented a new significant release of the distribution, focusing on use in various network devices such as routers, switches, and access points. OpenWRT 23.05.0 supports many different platforms and architectures, and its build system allows for simple and convenient cross-compilation, including various components. This allows users to easily create the firmware or disk image with the desired set of pre-installed packages. The release includes assemblies for 36 target platforms.

The notable changes in OpenWRT 23.05.0 include:

  • By default, the cryptographic library wolfssl has been replaced with the library MBEDTLS. The MBEDTLS library, which was developed with the participation of ARM, offers advantages such as smaller storage space, ABI stability, long-term update support, and TLS 1.3 compatibility. Users still have the option to switch back to using Wolfssl or Opensl if needed.
  • Support for more than 200 new devices has been added, bringing the total number of supported devices to 1790. This includes devices based on the Qualcomm IPQ807X chip with Wi-Fi 6 (IEEE 802.11AX) support, SOC MediaTek Filogic 830 and 630, as well as HiFive RISC-V UNLEASHED and UnMATChed.
  • The targeted platforms now utilize the DSA (Distributed Switch Architecture) subsystem for adjusting and managing interleet computer
