Canonical Releases Ubuntu 23.10 “Mantic Minotaur” with Improved Features
Canonical has announced the release of the distribution Ubuntu 23.10 “Mantic Minotaur”. This version is considered an intermediate release, with updates being provided for a duration of nine months, until July 2024. Ready-made installation images are now available for various editions, including Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, Ubuntukylin (for China), Ubuntu Unity, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Cinnamon.
Main Changes in Ubuntu 23.10
- The desktop environment has been updated to the GNOME 45 release, bringing several improvements. The panel now includes a dynamic indicator of virtual desktops, the search engine performance has been enhanced, a new camera application has been added, and video acceleration is now utilized. Furthermore, the image viewer and camera application have been replaced, and there have been changes to the style and display of side panels. The update also includes the inclusion of the GNOME CLOCKS application.
- The Linux kernel has been upgraded to version 6.5. Notable changes include the use of the ZSTD compression algorithm for the kernel modules, leading to reduced boot time. Additionally, the kernel package now includes fresh sets of patches for Shiftfs, Apparmor, and LSM. The update also introduces the Multi-Generational Lru (MGLRU) mechanism, which enhances memory management for faster performance in desktop-oriented tasks. The ZFS implementation is updated to version 2.2.0 ~ rc3, and support for user identifier mapping during mounting is added to the Ceph file system.
- Several software packages have been updated in Ubuntu 23.10. These include GCC 13.2.0, Binutils 2.41, Glibc 2.38, Python 3.11.5 (Python 3.12.0-RC2), Perl 5.36.0, LLVM 16 (LLVM 17 is also available), Rust 1.71, Openjdk 21 (along with Openjdk 17), .net 7.0.110
