Today, Tesla has made a major breakthrough in the production of its battery element 4680 at its GigaFactory in Texas, reaching a milestone of 20 million elements produced at the factory.
Information about the production of Tesla’s battery element 4680 has been kept under wraps for quite some time, despite its crucial role in the company’s new models, including the Cybertruck. This element, created by Tesla from scratch, was first revealed to the public on Battery Day in 2020.
Tesla has stated that the new design of the battery element will lead to a cost reduction of more than 50%. However, mass production has encountered several challenges.
Today, Tesla has announced the release of its 20 millionth battery element 4680 at its GigaFactory facility in Texas. This achievement is particularly remarkable considering that the milestone of 10 million was only reached in June.
Over the past 16 weeks, Tesla has produced 10 million battery elements 4680, averaging around 625,000 elements per week. However, the actual production figures are likely even higher.
Tesla’s 4680 battery element has a capacity of approximately 26 AH, corresponding to a power of about 100 WH. As a result, the company produces roughly 80 MWH of these elements on a weekly basis at its GigaFactory in Texas. With a battery pack capacity of 65 KWH, Tesla can manufacture over 1,200 cars per week. For the Cybertruck model, which has an estimated battery capacity of 130 KWH, this number can be halved.
These results mark a significant step forward, with an annual production capacity of about 4 GWH. While Tesla still has a long way to go to reach its planned goal of 100 GWH per year at the GigaFactory in Texas, the company is already demonstrating an impressive pace of battery mass production.
