VERACRYPT Releases Version 1.26.7 with Major Updates and Innovations
After more than 18 months of development, the VERACRYPT team presented a large update of its software to encrypt open source code, releasing version 1.26.7. The update includes a number of important changes that can affect reverse compatibility, especially for users who have switched to Veracrypt from TrueCrypt, the previous encryption project, the development of which was discontinued under dubious circumstances.
Here is a list of key updates and innovations in version 1.26.7 VERACRYPT:
- Removing support of the TrueCrypt mode, which means that in Veracrypt 1.26.7 and subsequent versions there is no longer the opportunity to mount Truecrypt volume.
- Removing support for the RipemD160 and Gost89 algorithms, which makes it impossible to mount volumes using these algorithms, in Veracrypt 1.26.7 and subsequent versions. The developers recommended the use of the previous version 1.25.9 to turn volumes before updating to version 1.26.7.
- Support for EMV banking cards as key files for unsystematic volumes. The EMV standard was developed by Europay, MasterCard, and Visa for safe payments using credit, debit, and prepaid cards. Veracrypt implements support for all bank cards that meet the EMV standard without the need to enter the PIN code or a separate configuration of the PKCS#11 module.
- Introduction of the support of the PRF Blake2S algorithm to encrypt standard and system volumes, which provides a quick and safe drifting method. Blake2 is a cryptographic hash function, which, according to the developers, is faster than MD5, Sha-1, Sha-2, and SHA-3.
- Improving the default protection on Windows – non-administrative processes are blocked from Veracrypt memory reading.
- Introduction of a new process of mitigating the process on Windows to prevent Veracrypt injections from other processes.
- Refracting the problem of safe desktop in Windows 11 version 22H2.
- Improving compatibility with Ubuntu 04/23.
- Correction of a number of problems when working in text mode on Linux systems.
