US Network Neutrality Opponents Criticize Biden Administration’s Plans

In the United States, opposition to the plans of the Biden administration to restore network neutrality for Internet services increased. Republican senators argue that this politicized decision will not pass a judicial audit.

Proposals for the revival of the policy adopted by President Obama in 2015, and then abolished two years later by the Trump administration, were nominated at the end of last month. Jessica Rosenvorsel, Chairman of the Federal Commission for Communications (FCC), expressed the intention to vote on the restoration of network neutrality, the disputes about the benefits and dangers of which are still not faded.

In an open letter sent to Jessica Rosenvorsel, 43 republican senators called for a review of this decision, claiming that the return of the “strict rules of regulation” would be a mistake.

Senators claim that the Internet growth continues to be a “great American success”, emphasizing the progress in deploying new generation telecommunication services in the United States, such as 5G and Wi-Fi 6e, compared to “strongly regulated Internet providers” in Europe.

However, the discussion that the deployment of 5G in Europe is inhibited is ambiguous. The lack of investment from the telecommunication companies themselves and restrictions on the Huawei equipment can also be key factors.

In a letter, senators claim that FCC attempts to return network neutrality will not pass judicial control.

In Europe, telecommunications operators insist on increasing the regulation of large technological companies to make them make more contribution to the maintenance of networks.

The heads of more than 20 telecommunication companies in an open letter to the European Commission for the European Commission They called for a fair contribution from those companies that benefit the most from this infrastructure.

Operators argue that until 2030 new investments in the industry in the amount of at least €174 billion will be required to support and develop the EU infrastructure. According to them, the growth of Internet traffic on average is 20-30% every year, and the capabilities of the network need to be updated comparable to this regular growth.
