Japan Cyberpatrol Introduces Japio to Prevent Crimes

The National Police Agency (NPA) in Japan has implemented the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its cyberpursuit efforts, aiming to detect information on the internet that may be linked to criminal activities. This was reported by Japanese media sources.

In the past, the police relied on a private IT company to search for posts on social media platforms and websites, using specific keywords that could indicate potential criminal actions, particularly those involving firearms and explosives. However, the new AI-based system automatically identifies suspicious content from the vast amount of information available online, analyzing the words used and their context.

The decision to adopt this technology comes in response to a recent increase in crimes committed using firearms and explosives, enabled by the perpetrators obtaining information from the internet. Incidents such as robberies and fraudulent activities by individuals recruited through online publications have also been reported.

The National Police Agency is hopeful that the AI system will aid in the prevention of crimes. By increasing the effectiveness of cyberpolicing and promptly identifying harmful information, the agency aims to enhance the overall security of the digital space.
