Croatian Law Enforcement Raids Liberland Micro-State, Confiscates Belongings
Croatian law enforcement agencies recently made the next raid on the Liberland micro-state-owned community located on an island in the disputed territory between Croatia and Serbia. During the raid, the personal belongings of the “local residents,” their food, and equipment were confiscated.
Liberland, founded in 2015 by Czech politician Vita Ellika, stretches for 7 square kilometers along the western bank of the Danube River. Although the island is not physically inhabited, the micro-state has over 240 thousand electronic citizens, as well as more than 100 representative offices around the world.
The main idea of Liberland is to create a shelter for ultralibertarians. Its main currency is the cryptocurrency “Liberland Merit,” although donations are also accepted in other cryptocurrencies and US dollars.
Eight years after its founding, Liberland is still perceived by many as a joke. Although nobody lives there permanently, every year, the cryptocurrency festival “Floating Man” takes place.
The latest invasion of Croatia in Liberland occurred on September 21, during the eighth festival “Floating Man” and on International World day.
Croatian police, accompanied by representatives of forestry, entered the island and confiscated the property of those present, including food, equipment, personal belongings, electronic equipment, bicycles, ATVs, and other transport. The police also dismantled the wooden buildings built on the territory of the island. According to a press release, several Liberland citizens were even arrested for non-compliance with police orders.
Vit Oselichka expressed sincere concern about this and called on the international community to take action.
“We are calling on the international community, as well as Croatian politicians and Croatian institutions, to stop this madness. This is an unnecessary and unprovoked act of violence against our peaceful nation, our borders, and our sovereignty. We hope that this is the last incident in our long-term relations,” said Oselichka.
