Ubuntu has presented the beta version of Ubuntu 23.10 “Mantic Minotaur”, after the freeze of the package base. Developers have now moved on to the final testing and error correction phase. The release, which is part of the intermediate releases, with updates formed over a period of 9 months, is scheduled for October 12. Test images are now available for Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, Ubuntukylin (China edition), Ubuntu Unity, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Cinnamon.
The main changes in this release include:
- The desktop has been updated ahead of GNOME 45 release. Notable updates include the addition of a dynamic indicator of virtual desktop in the panel, improved search engine performance, added camera support, video acceleration, updated image viewer and camera application, as well as changes in the style and display of side panels. Furthermore, the release includes updates to GTK 4.12 and Libadwaita 1.4 libraries, and the supply of GNOME CLOCKS application for Ubuntu.
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.5. Noteworthy changes for Ubuntu include the inclusion of compression modules using the ZSTD algorithm, resulting in reduced boot time. Additionally, the release incorporates fresh sets of patches for Shiftfs, Apparmor, and LSM. The default mechanism for Multi-Generational Lru (mglru) has been enabled, replacing the old implementation of Lru based on two queues with a multi-stage structure. This improvement better determines which memory pages are truly used and which can be displaced in the podcasting section. The ZFS implementation has also been updated, now at version 2.2.0 ~ rc3, and support for user identifier mapping during mounting has been added to the Ceph file system.
- Updated versions of various software are also available in the repository, including GCC 13.2.0, Binutils 2.41, Glibc 2.38, Python 3.11.5 (Python 3.12.0-RC2), Perl 5.36.0, LLVM 16 (LLVM 17 is also available), Rust 1.71, Openjdk 21 (Openjdk 17 is also available), .NET 7.0.110, and GO 1.21.
