FreeBSD Project Celebrates 30th Anniversary

The FreeBSD project has reached its 30th anniversary, celebrating its history of a fast, stable and reliable operating system for I386 processor systems.

June 19, 1993 marked the official birth of the project, when FORK 4.3BSD was created on the basis of an unofficial set of patches from 386BSD with the aim of developing an OS that met these specifications.

During the naming process, FreeBSD was ultimately chosen over other options such as BSDFREE86 and Free86BSD, with the name being proposed by David Greenman.

In November 1993, the first release of FreeBSD 1.0 was launched, based on 4.3BSD-Lite ‘net/2’ and 386BSD 0.1. The project has since grown and evolved, with a devoted community of contributors and users.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the FreeBSD project has organized a special event on its official website.
