The United States Ambassador Messenger on cyberspace and digital policy, Nathaniel S. Fic, has said that China has developed a strategy to steal intellectual property in order to become a leader in the field of cloud computing. He has emphasized on the need for other countries to unite in order to prevent China from implementing its script successfully.
While speaking at an event organized by the analytical center of the Hudson Institute, Fic explained that 30 years ago democratic countries had an advantage in telecommunications, thanks to the successes of companies like Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Bell Labs, Alcatel, and Lucent. However, according to Fic, these companies have lost their vigilance, and governments have lost interest in technology development.
The ambassador believes that China has stolen key intellectual property to create new generation wireless networks and then subsidized Huawei and ZTE globally, offering them transactions on disadvantageous conditions. Fic claims that Huawei contributed to the development of China’s national innovative power.
According to Fic, European telecom operators state that Huawei equipment is quite competitive and, in some cases, even better than analogues. The ambassador warns that China’s actions in the telecom industry follow a thoughtful script and that it will use the same strategy in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and all key strategic fields of technology.
Fic stresses the need for China to be prevented from implementing its script, and for creating a coalition of single-minded countries that could cooperate in the field of technology and use their free markets to stimulate innovation. He proposes the regulation of AI as a priority direction, considering that AI’s capabilities are growing exponentially, and governments do not have enough time to develop limiters.
