A new release of Proxmox Virtual Environment, version 8.0, a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux, has been announced. The software is designed for the deployment and maintenance of virtual servers using LXC and KVM, providing a viable alternative to popular products such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix Hypervisor. The ISO image for installation is roughly 1.1 GB in size and is available for download from the Proxmox website.
Proxmox VE includes built-in tools for automating the virtual environment and supports clustering capabilities right out of the box. This allows for the seamless migration of virtual machines from one unit to another without system disruption. The web interface offers several features such as safe VNC console support, access to various objects, and support for various authentication mechanisms such as MS ADS, LDAP, Linux Pam, and Proxmox VE Authentication.
The latest release includes:
- Transition to the Debian 12 package base
- Linux kernel version 6.2 upgrade
- Updated versions of Qemu 8.0.2, LXC 5.0.2, Openzfs 2.1.12
- Transparent upgrade path from Proxmox VE 7.4
- Alternative installer with a text interface for hardware compatibility
- Inclusion of CPU X86-64-V2-AES type for virtual machines
- Launch of the new Ceph Enterprise Repository
- Added processor for periodic synchronization of users and groups
- Added access control list (ACL) support for software-defined networks (SDN)
