Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation is working on an initiative that will offer universities free access to software registered under the Russian software registry. Minister Maksut Shadaev revealed this information at CNews Forum-2023 and mentioned that this move will enable universities to use a wide range of software to teach students.
Shadaev stated, “We believe that the entire software, which is included in the register of Russian software, should be provided free of charge to universities. In this sense, universities for students to teach students can use any software. And we are working on this initiative now.” This measure will benefit universities to use software of their choice to educate students.
Additionally, the Minister talked about the project “Digital Department,” with the Ministry of Education and Science, which is providing funding support to more than 100 higher education institutions. These institutions can create a digital department, giving students a chance to acquire an additional specialization in the IT field without any interruption in their primary course of study. Over 130,000 students are currently registered for these digital departments, with one-third focused on machine learning, artificial intelligence, and big data.
Shadaev highlighted that the Ministry of Construction is designing the training programs based on industry needs, and not just limited to software development. IT companies from a wide range of sectors are also providing assistance in creating bespoke training programs. The programs developed take into consideration the specific requirements of the industry and provide solutions accordingly. Shadaev concluded, emphasizing the importance of IT companies to work along with universities to create industry-specific programs to keep up with the requirement of modern industries.
