GitHub Copilot Predicted to Boost Global GDP by $1.5T

study showed that the use of artificial intelligence in the development of software can significantly increase productivity and innovation in the world.

Software developers are faced with constantly growing demand for high -quality and complex applications that can solve various tasks and needs. However, the creation of such software requires a lot of time, effort and knowledge.

In order to simplify and speed up this process, GitHub, which is the world’s largest storage for software developers, introduced a new tool called Github Copilot less than a year ago. This is an extension for Visual Studio and other developer tools, which operates on the basis of Openai Codex – one of the most advanced technologies of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Github Copilot helps to create programs, offering scripts, sentences in natural language and coding. New versions of the tool also integrate the GPT-4 model, which provides improved chat and voice support, and also provides a detailed explanation of the code and correct errors. With the latest improvements, developers can create a code without the need to touch the keyboard.

GITHUB Director General Thomas Domka said that the “symbiotic” relationship between Copilot and GitHub ”has the potential to form the design of world software for future generations.”

In his study, which he conducted together with the professor of Harvard Business School Marco Yangiti and CEO of Keystone.ai Greg Richards, Domka analyzed the activity of almost a million Github developers who use Copilot. He found that they received about 30 percent of Copilot and reported their performance.

In tests, the developers were invited to write an HTTP server on JavaScript. Half of them were allowed to use Copilot, and the other half did not. Those who used Copilot completed their projects 55 percent faster than those who were in the control group told Domka.

Authors studies also evaluated the potential economic effect of the use of Copilot and other generative tools. They concluded that such technologies can lead to an increase in the global gross domestic product by 1.5 trillion dollars by 2030, accelerating innovation and development in various industries and regions.

They also noted that the use of Copilot and generative AI will not lead to a reduction in the number of developers, but, on the contrary, will create more opportunities for training, employment and other prospects for people who want to engage in programming. They called for global efforts to expand these capabilities and prepare society for a more digital and innovative future.
