Barry Kauler, the mastermind behind the Puppy Linux project, has announced the release of easyos 5.4, according to a recent blog post. The new distribution combines container technology with Puppy Linux architecture, enabling system components to be launched with container insulation. The system’s control is managed through a range of graphic configurators, which have been developed by the project.
The distribution is available for download from https://distro.ibibblio.org/easyos/amd64/releases/kirkstone/2023/5.4/easy-5.4-amd64.imga and is sized at 860 MB. This new version builds upon its predecessor with additional features to enhance the user experience.
One major feature that makes Easyos stand out is its use of easy Containers that provides isolation mechanisms for launching applications as well as the desktop itself. This ensures user privacy and security. Additionally, the system works by default with Root rights, with privileges discharged when starting each application. According to the developers, Easyos 5.4 is positioned as a Live system of one user.
The distribution is easily installed in a separate subdirectory, allowing it to coexist with other data on the system’s hard drive. Admins can save user data, including individual subdirectories such as /Home, and additional containers with applications are placed in the catalog /containers, further enhancing the user experience.
The distribution’s atomic mode automatically copies the new version to another catalog and switches to the active catalog with the system, thereby supporting changes rollback in the event of any problem after the update. Additional features include launch mode from RAM, one-click installation of meta-packets in SFS format, and WoofQ tools and the initial texts of packages from the OpenEmbeded.
The desktop is based on JWM and the ROX file manager, with Firefox, Libreoffice, Scribus, Inkscape, Gimp, Mtpain, Dia, GPICVIEW, GEANY textual editor, and HomeBank personal finance management system among the applications included as a basic supply.
