After 10 years of development, the first alpha version of the Kera desktop user environment has been released. Developed using web technologies, the environment offers typical windows control, panel, menu, and virtual desktop features. However, the first release is limited to the launch of only Web applications (PWA). In the future, the team behind the project plans to add the possibility of launching ordinary programs and creating a specialized distribution based on the Fedora Linux package.
The project code is written in JavaScript and is distributed under GPLV3 license. Ready-made assemblies are available for Linux, Chrome OS, macOS, and Windows. The Kera desktop user environment offers many features.
The menu uses networks of icons and vividly displays colors of different categories. It also allows application panels to combine with system panels when opening applications on the entire screen. The side panels facilitate the grouping of applications, files, and web pages, and provide access to built-in web-affected features.
Additionally, the user environment offers support for virtual desktops with the possibility of quickly switching applications between them. The panel system is designed to simplify operations by dropping only the indicator for its disclosure. The notification output system is also excellent, as it’s designed with the calculation that pop-up notifications should not overlap other contents if possible.
All in all, the Kera desktop user environment is a significant development in the world of technology and allows for more innovative solutions to the everyday user’s desktop experience.
