The distribution of Opensuse Leap 15.5 was recently released after a year of development. This release is based on a single binary packet with some user applications from the Opensus tumbleww eed repository, which simplifies transition between distributions, saves resources for assembling packages, distribution of updates, and testing. It also allows you to move away from diagnosing different package assemblies when analyzing errors. The universal DVD-collection, a trimmed image for installation with loading on the network, and live-assembly with KDE, GNOME, and xfce are available for download.
Updates for the Opensuse Leap 15.5 branch will be available until the end of 2024. Originally, it was planned that version 15.5 would be the last in the 15.x series. However, the developers have decided to form another 15.6 issue next year before the planned transition to the use of the ALP (Adaptable Linux Platform) platform as the basis of the Opensuse and SUSE Linux. The key difference of the ALP is the separation of the basic base of the distribution into two parts: the cut “Host OS” for work on top of the equipment and a layer for supporting applications, focused on launching in containers and virtual machines.
The formation of another functional output in the Opensuse Leap 15 branch will be formed next year will give developers extra time to bring the alp platform. As for the basic innovations, the user environment has been updated, including KDE Plasma 5.27.4, XFCE 4.18, Deepin 20.3, and LXQT 1.2. The graphic stack has been updated, including QT 6.4/5.15.8, Wayland 1.21, and Mesa 22.3.5. The browser engines WEBKIT2GTK3 and WebKit2GTK4 have also been updated to version 2.38.5. The GNOME version has not changed, as GNOME 41 is proposed in the last issue. SWAY 1.6.1, ENLightenment 0.25.3, Mate 1.26, and Cinnamon 4.6.7 are also included.
