GitHub Repository for IPMI Tool Translated into Archive Mode Without Warning
The global software development platform GitHub has shocked users by converting the project repositories for the IPMI tool into archive mode without prior warning. This means that the repositories can only be accessed in reading mode, preventing any future updates or modifications.
In addition to this, all repository regions of Alexander Amelkin, who accompanied IPMI Tool were also converted. IPMI Tool is a widely-used open command-line tool for controlling, monitoring, and setting servers with BMC controllers that support the standard Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). It forms a part of RHEL, SUSE, Debian, and other Linux distributions.
The reasons for this sudden action are unclear. Although no official statement has been made, the word on the street is that GitHub enforced the restrictions following the identification of Alexander Amelkin’s company, Yadro, as one that was included in the US blocking sanctions list at the end of February. Yadro’s Ukrainian offices were also searched by local authorities in the same month.
As a result, GitHub has placed all references to Yadro’s open-source projects, including its employees’ repositories in archive mode and allowed access only in reading mode. While GitHub’s action is understandable, many users have expressed disappointment at the lack of prior notice or explanation.
The move is expected to have a significant impact on the open-source community since the IPMI Tool is widely used worldwide. GitHub is yet to make any comment on whether the repositories will be restored in the future or not.
