Dozens of young geeks keep their eyes on their computer in large rooms whose windows are completely closed by black blinds. Tas of stuffed animals and figurines stand on each desk. We see bikes or an orange plastic dinosaur in the corridors. A table football next to the bar… It is in these Parisian offices of the Fortiche animation studio that is developed, in the greatest secrecy, the second season of the successful series Arcane, derived from the video game League of Legends and soon broadcast on Netflix.
Tuesday, February 28, the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak, accompanied by the general secretary for investment, Bruno Bonnell, in charge of the France 2030 plan, visited the company at length, following the whole process, from the Indications on the scenario sent from Los Angeles to the animated images validated. Work of an absolute meticulousness, underlines Hervé Dupont, the director general of Fortiche: “We need a day to finalize three seconds” of Arcane. If the Minister praised French excellence in animation, she especially wanted to “enhance the eco -responsible steps” and announce the second call for alternatives green “to support the cultural industries that innovate and continue the decarbonation of culture”.
The first call for projects on this theme, endowed with 9.3 million and launched in September 2021, supported 35 initiatives, particularly the animation sector. This is how Qarnot Computing, the supplier of storage capacity in the Cloud of the Fortnite studio, developed a technology reusing up to 96 % of the heat produced by its very gourmet computer servers in calculation power. With the help of the France 2030 plan, Qarnot, which uses the heat of different 3D studios, today heats the showers of a social center in Nantes, of a social housing of 8 e district Parisian or an industrial site in Finland. An idea that appeals to investors since this start-up has just raised 35 million euros.

According to his CEO, Guillaume Hellouin, a beam of technologies has been used, including a cooling ventilation that works with Seine water or a data center combined with an artificial intelligence system aimed at reducing energy consumption . The aids of the green alternative project also facilitated the development of a first carbon footprint for animation, the “carbollator”, which will allow any producer or studio to precisely control its carbon emissions.
