US Marshals Service (USMS) investigates cyber attack on its systems, which led to the theft of confidential information of law enforcement agencies.
USMS is a bureau of the US Department of Justice, which supports all elements of the federal justice system, fulfilling the decisions of the federal court, arresting illegally received assets, ensuring the security of state witnesses and their families, and much more.
Press Secretary of the USMS DRU WADE said that USMS discovered “The case of infection with extortion software and data leakage, which affected a separate USMS system” February 17.
“The touched system contains confidential information of law enforcement agencies, including trial results, administrative information and personal data related to USMS investigations, third parties and some USMS employees,” Wida added.
According to sources close to the incident, the database of the WISMS witness program (Witness Security Files Information System, Witsec) is not affected. Currently, the hacked system is disconnected from the USMS network, and the attack is actively investigated as a “major incident”. A large incident is a hack that is so significant that it requires USMS notification of the congress.
