Violence broke out after death of two Israelis in busy West Bank attack

Israeli settlers have burned dozens of cars and houses in the north of the West Bank on Sunday evening, in an explosion of unprecedented violence.

After two young Israelis living in a Jewish colony in the occupied West Bank were shot on Sunday, February 26, in an attack on their car, violence broke out in the Palestinian city of Houwara, near Nablouse.

Israeli settlers burned dozens of cars and houses on Sunday evening. According to the Palestinian media, around thirty houses and cars were burned. Photos and videos broadcast on social networks showed major fires in Houwara. In a video, a host of Jewish settlers pray while watching a building in flames.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said that a 37 -year -old man was killed by Israeli fire. The Palestinian Red Crescent-Red Medical Service said that two other people had been shot, that one third had been stabbed and that a fourth was struck with an iron bar. Nearly a hundred other people have been treated for inhaling tear gas.

The ambassador of the United Kingdom to Israel, Neil Wigan, said that “Israel must tackle the violence of the colonists and translate those responsible into court”.

Ghassan Douglas, a Palestinian official who monitors the Israeli colonies in the Nablouse region, said the settlers burned at least six houses and dozens of cars in Houwara, and reported attacks on other Palestinian villages neighbors. He estimated that around four hundred Jewish settlers took part in the attack. “I have never seen such an attack,” he said.

The death of the two young Israelis occurs in a context of rise in violence, especially in the north of the West Bank, where the army has multiplied its operations for almost a year. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. On Wednesday, eleven Palestinians were killed in Nablus in the deadliest raid led by the Israeli army in the West Bank since at least 2005.
