The former Hollywood star-producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced Thursday, February 23 to sixteen years in prison in Los Angeles for rape and sexual assault in 2013 of an Italian actress and model in a hotel in Beverly Hills. The former Kings of Hollywood cinema, 70 years old, is already serving a sentence of twenty-three years’ imprisonment following his conviction in New York, in 2020, for similar facts and which he appealed . He also appealed for his conviction Thursday in Los Angeles. 2> “I was a happy woman”
To his trial in California, Harvey Weinstein had directly challenged the judge by assuring: “I maintain that I am innocent, I have never violated or sexually assaulted [the complainant].” A little before, she had said how much she suffered from having been attacked. “Before that night, I was a happy woman and sure of her. I had self-esteem and I gave value to my relationship with God,” she said. “I was enthusiastic about my future. Everything changed when [Mr. Weinstein] brutally attacked me. No prison sentence is long enough to undo my damage.”
The judge had refused a motion filed by the lawyers of Harvey Weinstein, who asked for a new trial. The jurors spared the accused an even heavier sentence by paying him accusations of sexual attack against a masseuse, and by failing to achieve a decision in cases concerning two other women.
Defense argued, during the trial, that Harvey Weinstein had mutually granted sex with two of the women who accused him of assault, and that the other two women – whose affair ultimately has led to his conviction – had fully invented their stories.
