Prison supervisors have been waiting for him for a long time. Eric Dupond-Moretti, Minister of Justice, announced on Tuesday, February 21 at the National School of Penitentiary Administration (ENAP) in Agen, the passage of supervisors in category B of the public service and officers in category A to count From 1 er January 2024. Previously the first were Category C civil servants, the latter, category B. This increase must also be accompanied by a “index and significant compensation” even if it is not yet quantified, a decision to be made at the end of spring. “It is a historical advance because for a long time claimed and fully deserved you who embody the third security force of our country, insisted the Keeper of the Seals. For the occasion, Mr. Dupond-Moretti had notably come accompanied by Stanislas Guerini, Minister of Public Transformation and Function, and pronounced his short speech before the new promotion of the ENAP, which had made his Back to school Monday, February 20. In addition, the former lawyer has announced the recruitment of contract workers (the number of which is not yet fixed) who will have to come and support the supervisors in their new missions.

These announcements are added to the measures of 2022, in particular a revaluation of 200 euros net per month for the supervisors at the start of their career and the merger of the grades of supervisors and brigadiers. In addition, the three successive increases in the justice budget (+ 26 % in three years) benefit the prison administration which absorbs a large part. Finally, the construction of 15,000 new prison places by 2027 also advances. The Minister estimated that ten projects out of the eighteen in progress will be finalized by the end of the year.
The training of prison supervisors is a somewhat special area. The average age is 28 years, which is quite high, there are a third of women and 25 % of the workforce comes from overseas. ENAP welcomes between 1,200 and 1,600 students every year, divided into several promotions. The initial training lasts six months with two internship periods of five weeks.
