“My priority is that my citizens feel safe,” argued Trent Conaway, the mayor of the small town of East Palestine, in Ohio, on February 15. A week after the derailment of a train carrying toxic chemicals, the elected official had organized a public meeting in his city, which is worried about the health consequences of the incident.
Norfolk Southern, the company that exploited the train that derailed, did not go to the meeting where it was invited to explain the population. The State Governor, Mike Dewine, publicly considered that the company was “responsible” for the incident and that the attorney general of his state was standing ready to bring the case to court if necessary.
