Russia: system of automatic search for prohibited materials “Okulus” was launched

Roskomnadzor (RKN) launched the Okulus system based on artificial intelligence, which can detect prohibited content in photographs or videos, such as extremism, propaganda of LGBT or pornography. This was announced by the representative of the main radio frequency center subordinate to the RKN, who was the customer of the project.

According to the representative of the GRChz “Information System” Okulus “has already been launched and performs the tasks assigned to it in full: it reveals violations of the law in images and video materials.”

According to him, in December 2022 the system was tested, and in January 2023 integration with other tools for monitoring Roskomnadzor was held.

He also clarified that until 2025 they plan to add the opportunity to determine new types of violations, as well as “Functions of determining the poses of people and their actions.” “Okulus” automatically identifies violations, such as extremism, calls for illegal measures, suicide, drug content, and LGBT propaganda, ”the representative of the center added, and noted that earlier GRCHC employees had to independently process more than 200 images and video in the video in Day.

In August last year, it became known that Roskomnadzor allocated 57.7 million rubles to develop a system of illegal content “Okulus”. The system will analyze photos, videos and texts on sites, on social networks and instant messengers for prohibited information using neural networks.
