Greece: government wants to prevent resurgence of golden dawn neonazis in legislative elections

In October 2020, after a river trial which lasted five years, Ilias Kasidiaris and seventy other leaders and members of Dorée Dorée were condemned for having directed or belonged “to a criminal organization” involved in the ‘ Assassination, in 2013, of an anti-fascist rapper, Pavlos Fyssas, and in homicide attempts against Egyptian fishermen and communist trade unionists in 2012 and 2013.

Only five days after his incarceration, Ilias Kasidiaris had posted his first video on the occasion of the Greek national holiday, entitled “first message of the prison”. A few months before the verdict of the Athens Criminal Court in October 2020, the ex-elected official, known for his anti-Semitic, racist and sexist diatribes, had formed his party, Ellines (the Greeks). The appeal trial of the Néonazi dawn party is currently continuing in Athens.

“Men of straw”

Ilias Kasidiaris, who proudly wears a swastika on his left arm, was the rising figure of the neonazi party. In 2012, he entered Parliament. In the midst of an economic crisis, dawn golden, surfing on misery and promising to give “priority to the Greeks”, had obtained nearly 7 % of the votes in the legislative elections and causes eighteen deputies. That same year, during a television program, the young man had made himself famous by slapping a communist deputy and throwing his glass of water on another elected representative of Syriza (Radical Left).

The amendment presented Tuesday, February 7 prohibits the president, the secretary general and the members of the management committee of a party to be elected if they were convicted of serious crimes, including “participation in a criminal organization “. He adds a condition for political training to be able to compete in the elections: “The organization and activity of the party must be at the service of the free functioning of the democratic constitution”.
