Bank of Russia explained new fraudulent scheme with QR codes

German Zubarev, deputy chairman of the Bank of Russia, said in an interview with Izvestia about a new fraudulent scheme related to QR codes. Fraudsters place codes in public places, promising citizens social benefits. However, in fact, the attackers lure the data of the victims for the subsequent theft of money.

QR codes are placed on the walls of houses, in entrances, at stops, parking, other public places and objects of the greatest accumulation of people. In the ads it is proposed to receive a consultation on guaranteed social benefits for free. It is about, Zubarev explained, about the benefits of socially unprotected citizens, families with children, payments to students, etc.

Scanning the QR code leads to a transition to a chatbot in a messenger, which claims that a citizen is paid a payment. Further, under the guise of payment of payment, scammers request personal and financial data that are used to steal money from the card.

The use of chat bots in people causes additional trust, creating a sense of the automatic service of some official department, Zubarev noted.

According to the publication, to protect against attackers, the Central Bank is preparing to introduce a two -day cooling period during which suspicious transfers will be suspended.

“The Finzer of the Bank of Russia maintains a database on cases and attempts to carry out money transfer without the consent of the client, which also contains information about the transactions, on payers and recipients of funds. Information of this base will be brought to the Bank-Bank-Bank Both the receiving bank of the payment, and they, in turn, will be required to use this information in their antifrod systems, ”explained the deputy chairman of the Central Bank.

In case of failure by the bank, the necessary measures to protect the client, he will have to return the entire stolen amount within 30 days. The bill with these norms received the approval of interested departments, in the near future it is planned to be adopted in the first reading.
