Meeting in Philadelphia, the National Committee of the Democratic Party (DNC) officially approved on Sunday, February 5, the great reshuffle of the primaries calendar desired by the American president Joe Biden. This decision should be favorable to him, in the event that he sees a second term.
In 2024, the first democratic primary will thus be held on February 3 in South Carolina, followed by Nevada and New Hampshire on 6, Georgia on 13 and Michigan on 27.
For years, the rural state of Iowa and that of the New Hampshire, both of more than 90 % with a white majority, were the subject of all attentions, by kicking off the start of the Democratic primary every four years.
But Mr. Biden suggested in December to open the primaries ball in the southern state of South Carolina, which has a large African-American population.
first primary in Iowa For republicans
The committee then approved this proposal during a vote by hand, only the members representing Iowa and the New Hampshire who voted against, before it was submitted this month to the vote of the Party management set.
Before the presidential election of 2020, Mr. Biden had suffered several failures in the primaries of Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada, before winning a very large victory in South Carolina. It was this state that allowed him to reverse the tide and to be finally chosen to challenge Donald Trump.
While it is very likely that Mr. Biden is running for a second term, he has not yet formalized his candidacy. For its part, the Republican Party still plans to hold its first primary in Iowa in 2024.
