Greece: died of woman and child in sinking of migrant boat

A rescue operation is always in progress to possibly find other passengers.

Following the sinking of a pneumatic canoe carrying migrants from the neighboring Turkish coasts, a child and a woman were found dead drowned off the Greek island of Leros on Sunday, February 5, announced the custody -Greek costs.

Thirty-three people were rescued, including six children who were transported to Leros hospital, they added, adding that a rescue operation was still in progress to possibly find other migrants.

Three coast guard boats and a Super Puma helicopter are mobilized, but weather conditions – strong winds and agitated sea – make rescue operations difficult, always according to the same sources. The alert was given by a fisherman who found the woman’s body at sea, specifies the newspaper of the editors (Efyn).

According to the testimonies collected by the coast guard and the police, the pneumatic canoe transported nearly forty exiles, including children, women, and people with reduced mobility. In December, a 2 month old baby was found dead after a sinking off the island of Lesbos.

Human dramas in the Aegean Sea are multiplying due to the risks taken by migrants who rise aboard makeshift boats on a stormy, even unleashed sea in winter. Since 2014, 2,246 people fleeing wars and poverty have drowned in the eastern Mediterranean, according to IOM, the International Organization for Migration.
