Droidian 99 Launches Debian Option for Smartphones

Available The release of the project Droidian 99, which develops the assembly based on the DEBIAN GNU/Linux package base, designed to use on smartphones instead of the Android platform. The PHOSH shell based on GNOME technologies and the GTK library is proposed as a graphic environment. The system and user environment are built using the debian and Mobian repositories. Unlike the Mobian distribution, which is aimed at using on boards and specialized Linux-smartphones, such as Pinephone, Droidian is focused on installing ordinary Android Smartphones.

To ensure compatibility with the hardware of smartphones in Droidian, the nucleus from the Android platform is involved, a set of system components from the Halium project and the Libhybris layer, which allows the use of the Android platform and working in the user’s space. To launch Android applications from the environment based on Debian, the Waydroid platform is used. To solve the tasks related to telephone and making calls, the stack office2mm is involved. The installation of additional programs in Flatpak format is supported.

The project stated the installation on the smartphones Xiaomi Poco M2 Pro/Redmi Note 9 Pro/Pro Max/9s, FXTEC PRO1, Sony Xperia 5, Google Pixel 3a/3a XL, and Volla Phone. Separately, the community is formed by unofficial firmware for Sony Xperia 1, OnePlus 3/3T, and Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro.

In the new version:

  • The package base is updated to Debian SID as of August 21.
  • A new graphic stack using Wayland protocol and components such as Wlroots 0.17.4, Phosh 0.41.0, PhoC 0.41.0, GTK 4.14.4, Phosh-Mobile-Settings 0.41.0, Libhybris 0.0.5.53 and Feedbackd 0.4.1.
  • In the OFONO2MM telephone stack, the possibilities associated with the leading of logs and display the state of the modem.
  • GNOME 47 moved Maps, Weather, Initial Setup and Eye of Gnome.
