KDE Plasma 6.2 Desktop Enters Beta Testing

Testing of the beta version of the Plasma 6.2 desktop is now available for users. Those interested can try out the new release through live assemblies from the OpenSUSE project and test assemblies from the KDE Neon project. Packages for various distributions can be found on this page. The official release of Plasma 6.2 is expected on October 8th.

The main changes in this release include:

  • For graphic tablets, a new calibration interface has been added, along with support for testing variable settings, the ability to reassign keys on the stylus, and support for comparing the tablet surface with a specific area on the screen.
  • Kwin’s composite manager now includes support for color management, such as support for Rendering Intents and compensation for the black point to improve black display when converting color spaces.
  • The implementation of the Wayland Protocol ALPHA-Modifier allows users to change the level of surface transparency and perform transparency operations that can be forwarded to KMS by the composite server.
  • Users within Wayland now have the ability to copy and paste from the system exchange buffer with active overview mode and other Kwin effects.
  • There is now an option to build Kwin with support for Wayland session only.
  • The update also includes the ability to use color profile data built into the monitor and separate brightness adjustment sliders for each connected monitor in the screen control widget.
  • Additionally, users can now reduce the blocking behavior of applications that prevent the system from going into sleep mode or launching the screen lock.
  • When using alternative energy consumption profiles, special icons will be displayed on the energy consumption indicator in the system tray to show both battery charge status and the selected energy consumption profile. The battery charge indicator will also be displayed during charging.
