The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the British data protection regulator, recently reported significant progress in combating websites that track users without their consent. According to a report from TechCrunch, some sites have changed their practices after intervention by the ICO to adopt the “Pay or agree” model. This model gives users the choice to either pay for access to content or consent to being tracked for advertising purposes.
Although the ICO did not disclose the specific websites that have implemented this new system, the regulator did highlight instances of non-compliance among certain companies with regard to cookie usage. Cookies are used by websites to personalize the user experience by remembering preferences. However, they can also be exploited to monitor user activities online, raising concerns about privacy and security.
