News report:
Rhino Linux 2024.2 has been released, offering users access to the latest program versions through continuous delivery of updates. The distribution is based on the Ubuntu version and new versions are mainly sourced from the Devel Vead Ubuntu repository, synchronized with Debian Unstable. Components such as desktop, Linux kernel, loading screensavers, design themes, Firefox browser, and project utilities are distributed through the pacstall repository.
Installation images are available for architectures x86_64 and ARM64, as well as for ARM, PINETAB2, PINEPHONE, PINEPHONE PRO, and RASPBERRY PI. Package management is done using the Rhino-PKG package manager, which acts as a binding above APT, Pacstall, Flatpak, and Snap package managers, allowing users to perform standard operations with various packages.
The distribution is built using Livebuild tools from the Debian project, along with modifications from VanillaOS, and installation is carried out through the Calamares installer. The graphical interface is based on the Unicorn user environment, a modified version of xfce designed to combine modern design with a traditional desktop approach. Plank Dock is used as the side panel of applications, while the top panel is based on XFCE.
For navigation on installed applications, the App Grid mode based on Lightpad is implemented within Unicorn. Navigation on open windows and virtual desktops is facilitated by the xfdashboard packet, that combines features from Gnome Shell and Macos Expose. Quick application launches are supported through ulauncher, offering a search bar for commands and file searches.
The project also includes the first settings application, a file exchange application (a branch from sypdrop), and a system information viewer and updater. For further details, you can visit the official news release.
