The elite unit of the US Army, known as the Green Berets, showcased their expertise in cyberspace during the recent training exercise Swift Response 24. As part of the training, a special purpose detachment Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) demonstrated their hacking skills by conducting an operation on networks while capturing a building in Sweden.
The highly skilled fighters of the 10th Special Forces Group used specialized equipment to connect to the Wi-Fi networks of the target building near Skillingaryud. This allowed them to monitor activity within the building after scanning it using a remote access device to identify the working networks. By hacking passwords, the fighters were able to access surveillance cameras, safety systems, and closed doors, which they then disabled.
In the subsequent phase of the operation, another detachment landed seven miles from the target. The fighters conducted reconnaissance, infiltrated the building, and installed equipment to emit signals to conceal their traces. Reportedly, they left behind a laptop playing Rick Astley’s song “Never Gonna Give You Up,” adding a touch of humor to the intricate military operation.
Swift Response 24, which is part of NATO’s large-scale training exercises, aimed to demonstrate the Alliance’s readiness for collective defense in the event of an attack on any member. This marked the first participation of new NATO members, Finland and Sweden, in such maneuvers. With over 40,000 troops from the US and other countries participating, the exercises sent a clear message to potential adversaries about NATO’s preparedness for defense.
The training emphasized the significance of cybersecurity and the utilization of advanced technologies, which have become crucial components of contemporary military operations. The incorporation of cyber skills by the Green Berets during Swift Response 24 highlighted the evolving nature of modern warfare.
