GNU Screen 5.0 Console Window Manager Released

After two and a half years since the last significant update, the full-screen window manager gnu screen 5.0.0 has been released. This new version allows users to organize a multi-interface in the console by using one physical terminal to work with several applications that are allocated to separate virtual terminals that remain active between different user sessions.

Among the changes in the release are:

  • Added authentication mechanism rewritten, with a new command “auth” replacing the password command for protecting session connections.
  • Added command “Multiinput” for simultaneous input in multiple windows.
  • Added command “Status” for configuring the placement of the window condition, with options including TOP, UP, Down, Bottom, Left, and Right.
  • Added the “Truecolor” command for using an expanded range of colors on compatible terminals.
  • Added ESCAPE sequences “%T” and “%O” for displaying the current TTY for the window and the number of open windows.
  • Switched to using the WCWIDTH() function for determining Unicode symbol sizes instead of built-in sizes for UTF-8.
  • Commands including Time, Debug, Password, Maxwin, and Nethack have been removed.
