40 Sri Lankans Seek Rescue From Cyber Camps

Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Harini Amarasuriya, has reached out to the Thai government seeking assistance in rescuing Sri Lankan citizens who are being held in cybercriminal camps in the Myavadi region of Myanmar. Amarasuriya’s office revealed that she has requested the Thai government’s help in organizing a rescue operation in collaboration with the Myanmar government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The plea was made during a meeting between the Prime Minister and the Thai Ambassador, Paitun Mahapannaporn, on October 10 at the Prime Minister’s Office. Amarasuriya expressed her appreciation for the assistance that was extended in rescuing 28 Sri Lankan citizens from the cybercriminal camps and urged for further support in releasing the remaining 40 compatriots who are still being held.

Ambassador Mahapannaporn congratulated Amarasuriya on her appointment as the Prime Minister and engaged in discussions regarding enhancing the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand. The talks also touched upon topics such as promoting the tourism industry, adopting modern agricultural practices, and collaborating on research related to post-harvest technologies and food processing at the agricultural faculties of Ruhuna and Wayamba universities.
